The F.I.R.S.T Chairman's award is the most prestigious award in the F.I.R.S.T. robotics competition. This award has nothing to do with robot design or function, but rather how the team itself operates. Teams that exemplify active service not only within their individual teams, but also in their schools and community, are possible recipients for this award. Teams are encouraged to spread the word of F.I.R.S.T. within their communities and to make new advances in science and technology.
The Watertown High School F.I.R.S.T. team works to contribute to their school and surrounding community. They are involved in many fundraisers that gain town wide exposure and spread the concept of F.I.R.S.T. They participate in several community projects such as town wide clean up days and a haunted house that raises money for juvenile diabetes.
In 2002, the Watertown team focused their efforts to provide participation in F.I.R.S.T. to a different group of people. Students worked together to build a control system that could be operated by a blind person. The system sent information to the player about where the robot was on the playing field and where it was in relation to other objects on the field. A computer then translated this data into audio information heard through headphones.
Team 237 will continue to work on community service and making an impact in their neighborhoods. Their effort leads to increased exposure for this exciting and inspirational program.
For the past five years, members of the Sie-H20-bots have been volunteering their time at the Haunted Graveyard, the largest haunted attraction in Southern New England. Members volunteer their Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights in October to work long hours with only a short break. People pay money to go through different "houses" to be scared at every corner by the workers. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Juvenile Diabetes Association. Over the past 12 years, the Haunted Graveyard has contributed $190,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Fund. The Sie-H20-bots are looking forward to a long future helping to raise money for this notable cause.
